In an interview with ESPN at the PODS Championship, Fred restated his desire to have Robin Williams and Michael Jordan involved with the US team in the Presidents Cup.
“I think Michael is one of the greatest team players,” Couples said Tuesday at the Innisbrook Resort, where he will play this week in the PODS Championship. “Everyone likes him. I certainly do. Being around him, he has told me lots of things that maybe a Ray Floyd or Jack Nicklaus might not.
“As for Robin, I was hoping that we could meet him and have him come. If he comes to the tournament, great, come over and hang out with the guys. I have been on nine teams, this will be the 10th team I’ve been part of. It can get extremely boring. In my opinion, to have someone of that magnitude come in and be funny and entertaining, would be a treat for everyone.”
Fred, who had lobbied for to be a captain for the Ryder Cup in the past, also stated that this met his goal on functioning as a captain.
“This would be enough for me,” Couples said. “This is going to be a tremendous honor for me to be captain. All of the players have been excited. It will be a dream of a lifetime to do that.”
But don’t rule out Fred taking another round as Presidents Cup captain after 2009, particularly if they win and the players respond well to him. It could even have the effect of forcing the PGA to consider him as a Ryder Cup captain, although that, in the unlikely case it would happen, would be down the road.
