Fred Couples may be playing in his last PLAYERS Championship this week. Or not. But the TPC Stadium course is the site of some of Fred’s most memorable moments.
When Fred Couples takes the tee on Thursday, it will be his last PLAYERS before heading off to the Champions Tour. He may make another appearance, but chances are that this will be his last PLAYERS as he had previously stated that he’ll only play the West Coast swing of the PGA Tour. (Of course, that’s subject to change…) The PLAYERS have produced arguably two of Fred’s best wins, the 1992 Masters aside. The 1984 PLAYERS win put him on the map and the 1996 win, with an amazing final round 64, is the stuff of legend. Replays of his memorable eagle at 16 and the unforgettable reaction to the birdie at 17 will live on long in PLAYERS history. And who can’t remember his most unique par at the 17th, holing his re-teed shot in 1997 after his first found the water?
For a unique insight into Fred’s life, Golf Digest posted a memorable interview with Fred and caddie Joe LaCava by Bob Verdi yesterday leading up to this week’s PLAYERS.
The Players Championship is played at TPC Sawgrass, designed by Pete Dye. The course plays over 7,200 yards at a par of 72 and opened in 1980.
