As Fred fan Paul Kale reported the Homepage, Couples was playing a remarkable round of golf on saturday, as he reached the 13th hole at -3 for the day. On that hole, Couples flinched right after his drive, but managed to contain his back condition until the 16th hole arrived. After a drive and a perfect lay up, Couples hit his approach to this par-5 in the water and bent over in pain right after. Carding a triple bogey on that hole, Fred was done for the tournament.

It is difficult to know when Fred will play next. Far from the top 30 in the money list, Couples will probably not try to earn himself a spot at the Tour Championship. This said, we might see him at the last WGC tournament of the year, the American Express Championship, that will be played from September 28th to October 1st.

In perfect shape after this year’s Masters, Couples failed to make the team on points, and did not play well enough recently to be a factor in Tom Lehman’s decision. The man is however still in the top 50 in the World Rankings, and will play this week in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, a tournament with a high purse and no cut.

Fred has the last tee time of the first round, at 1:30 PM ET. The tournament will be played at Firestone Golf Club, a course that Fred likes a lot. Stay tuned for more coverage.
