The conditions at Muirfield Village copied what many other PGA Tour tournaments have done – gone to a US Open style setup. The incredibly long, thick rough proved to be an exceedingly difficult challenge and scoring reflected the penal nature of this year’s tournament.

Fred Couples opened strong in the first round of the Memorial, carding a superb 69 (-3). With players still on the course, including provisional leader Steve Flesch, the man stands 3 shots shy of the lead with plenty of golf left to be played.

If Fred had to name his favorite golf courses, Muiffield Village would probably be an easy second choice after Augusta National. Despite some amazing shots on the back nine, Fred Couples came one shot shy of a playoff and a possible win at the Memorial.
Playing in the last group with David Toms, Fred played some inspired golf on the back side, after an ordinary first nine.

Fred Couples fired a third round 66 to get into the last group with David Toms at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio. The round was hi-lighted by an eagle at the par 5 15th as well as a winding, downhill 17-footer at the last hole for birdie.
