First round 72 @ The Honda Classic

Fred Couples shot an even-par round of 72 (E) in the opening round of the Honda Classic. Despite a slow start, the man never gave up and is now in a very decent position heading into the second round.

After three holes, it looked like Fred could probably shoot his worst round of the year. However, as the round progressed, Couples started to play better golf, and eventually brought the ship back to even par through 10 holes. Then, on the par-3 15th hole, the man hit a superb approach shot that stopped 7 inches from the hole, and went into red figures for the first time of the day. After a disapointing 3-putt green at the par-5 17th, Couples bogeyed the 18th to get back to even for the day, and a tie for 30th place.

Five shots back after one, Couples could move up the leaderboard quite fast on friday if the wind starts to blow in the afternoon. Playing in the morning session, Fred could be in the top 10 at the end of the day if he can manage to shoot a 69(-3) of a 68(-4).

Fred ready for the Honda

Fred is scheduled to play at this week’s Honda Classic, in Palm Beach Florida.

In 2005, the man finished tied for 22nd place, after a difficult final round of 74.

Fred Couples shot 66 (-6) in the third round of the Honda Classic. Tied for 6th place with one more round to go, the man is only four strokes behind.

Starting on the first hole, Couples got off to a superb start, recording three birdies and one eagle in the first six holes. Out with 32 (-4) after a three-putt bogey at the par-3 8th hole, Fred kept his great round going by carding two more birdies on the back side, at 16th and 17th holes. Fred to play the Honda

After playing the WGC Match Play Championship in february, where he lost in the second round to Retief Goosen, Fred Couples entered the field at this week’s event on the PGA Tour; the Honda Classic.

It will be Fred’s�sixth tournament in 2005. The last time Couples played the Honda Classic was in 2004. After two good rounds, the man faded into the weekend with a pair of 73′s, performance good for 25th place. Fred’s best finish at that tournament is of course his win in 1993.
