A preview article in the National Post talks about Fred’s appearance in the Canadian Open. Here’s an excerpt:

A stretch of more than two hours on the range Tuesday – some of it glad-handing with fellow golfers, but much of it firing bag after bag of balls – indicated Couples is in pretty good shape.

Just not good enough for him to think he can be an elite player any more.

“You always want to play well, but you’ve got to play more to beat these guys,” he said. “You can’t just show up after two weeks off and play Monday and hit balls Tuesday and play Wednesday and think you’re going to do well.

“But that’s where I’m at now.”

If Couples sounds like someone accepting the fact his PGA career is winding down, that is because it seems like he is.

He talks freely about readying himself for the Champions Tour following his 50th birthday next October and says he carries no melancholy about what might have been.

“I feel lucky,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that play injured, and I feel like I’ve done pretty well. If I was healthier, obviously I know I could have done better.”

Fred Couples played four solid rounds in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas. It netted Fred a top 25 – a significant achievement given that Fred had missed the cut in his last three events including the PGA Championship, the Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship. It marked his sixth top 25 finish for the year.

Couples shot a two-under 70, which dropped him from 17th, where he started the day, down to 24th. Couples had it to 4-under on the day, with the short par 4 15th (which he eagled in the third round) and the par 5 1th to go. Couples attempted to drive the green on the 15th, but his drive went right. He was unable to get up and down. He three putted the par 5 16th, leading to a bogey. Couples picked up another bogey at the 18th when he hit his approach into the water.

Fred finished eight shots behind winner Marc Turnesa.

Couples PGA Tour season is likely over. Couples will play in the ADT Skills Challenge in Florida the first of November and the World Challenge (Tiger’s tournament) in California just before Christmas.

Fred Couples played his cards to a draw in the third round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Fred drew a a pair of bogeys on the third and fourth holes, dropping him well down the leaderboard. Another bogey on the par four tenth, and it looked like it was time to fold.

However, Fred found new life on 12 and 13, scoring birdies at both holes moving him back to even for the day, and back up the leaderboard. Finally, at the short par 4 15th hole, Fred rolled the dice and hit jackpot as he made eagle. Another biride at the 16th, Fred was on a roll and moved to -3 for the day. Fred’s 69 pretty broke even for the day – six shots out of the lead held by Marc Turnesa.

Fred will let it ride tomorrow at 2:15 PM (Eastern) with Kevin Na.

It started off on a bad note – a double bogey six. Fred’s first round since August saw him struggle in his very first hole, but in all turned around on the back nine in that first round. Fred Couples would come in with a blistering 31. A first round 68, while good, left Fred well back in the birdie fest that is the TPC Summerlin.

In his second round, Fred would play one of his best rounds in a very long time – perhaps his best round in two years. It was the model of consistency and good putting. He started off on the back nine, and equaled his back nine score of the first round with 31. His only hiccup on his way to a second round 64 was a three-putt bogey at the par three eighth (Fred’s seventeenth). Fred bounced back at the par 5 ninth, striking a drive over 330 yards. His 5-iron from 220 yards was stayed out at the left, but a good effort from over 50 feet for eagle left a tap in birdie.

Fred finds himself six shots off the lead held by Matt Kuchar and Marc Tumesa. However, he is only three shots behind third place Zack Johnson. Fred will tee off in the third round at 2:56 PM with Chad Campbell.

In fact, it appears that Couples and Bryant left the course prior to the horn sounding for darkness on Saturday. According to rules officials, Steve Flesch, the third player in that group, wanted to keep playing. Due to the confusion, the group behind caught up to Fred’s group and demanded a ruling.

According to Fred fan Jake Jensen who attented the Vegas tournament, Fred hit the ball great but missed some several key putts throughout the first three rounds. In an interview, the man acknowledged that he did not perform well at all since the Masters, tournament where he clearly played his best golf in years.

Despite shooting seven under par in the first two rounds of the Michelin Championship, Fred Couples is eight shots off the lead with the weekend coming up.

Played over two different courses, this tournament is well known for its low scores. In fact, the lead is already at -15 halfway through the tournament. Standing at -7 after two rounds, Couples will have to shoot at least -8 during the weekend to earn his 10th top 25 of the season. While a win is now probably out of the equation, climbing up the leaderboard should be a priority for Fred, since it is clear now that the man is trying to sneak into the top 30 and an eventual invitation to the Tour Championship.
