Prior to the tournament, Couples talked about his final year on tour with the San Francisco Chronicle.

Fred Couples wades in no angst about his impending career decision. Many of his golfing colleagues, including good friend Jay Haas, bounced back and forth between the PGA Tour and Champions Tour when they turned 50, unable to choose between challenging the big boys and playing against golfers their own age (or older).

Couples, conveniently, found an ideal bridge from one phase of his career to the next. He will turn 50 on Oct. 3 and then, five days later, he will captain the U.S. team in the Presidents Cup at Harding Park. The day after that event ends, Couples plans to join Haas on a flight from San Francisco to Houston, where he will make his Champions Tour debut on Oct. 16.

“I’m not double dipping,” Couples said. “I’ll stick with the Champions Tour.”

Before he crosses this bridge, Couples first takes one last, nostalgic whirl across the grand stage. His final season on the PGA Tour brings him to the Monterey Peninsula this week for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, a tournament in which he has a long history.

Fred last played in this tournament in 2007, when he withdrew do to back problems.

AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is played at three courses on the Monterey Peninsula in California – Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills.

Playing in his third tournament in 2005, Fred Couples missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. With rounds of 75 (+3), 71 (-1) and 68 (-4), the man finished two shots�shy the cut line.

For the third round, Couples was playing Poppy Hills Golf Club, and as Fred fan tommypa reported, Fred did not have any desire to make the cut after a dissapointing first round at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
