Fred Couples lit up the front nine in the final round of the RBC Canadian Open, firing a blistering 5-under 30. Unfortunately, Fred was unable to keep up the pace he had set on the outward half as he bogeyed three holes in on the back nine. He did birdie the last hole, carding a 3-under 68. The round was good enough to move Fred up 10 spots into a tie for 20th place at 8-under par.

Fred finished nine shots behind winner Chez Reavie. The final round 68 was Fred’s best round of the week.

Below is a video shot by OttowaGolfBlog at YouTube of Fred and Mike Weir on the range.

Also, rumor has it from Fred Fan djeast that Golf Central is reporting that a special exemption has been extended to Fred Couples for the PGA Championship. More will be posted when available.

Rains forced Friday’s second round to be completed on Saturday and rain again on Saturday delayed portions of the third round. However, Fred Couples was able to complete his second round on Saturday and get his entire third round in too.

The leaders after the second round, however, were not able to complete their rounds and will have to go out Sunday morning to finish up.

Couples second round could have been even better than the 69 that he posted – back-to-back bogeys at the par 5 13th and par 4 14th derailed Couples who was 4-under.

In his third round, Couples had an fairly uneventful round. He paired three birdies with two bogeys and his third round 70 dropped him slightly from 27th place to 30th place. However, with golfers still on the course, his final third round position will be determined at the rounds completion on Sunday.

From a report in the Edmonton Journal, Fred will have a busy weekend.

As part of their efforts to attract players, tournament organizers rounded up VIP accommodations to local sporting events and concerts. Fred Couples planned to take in some Rogers Cup tennis and two Eagles concerts at the Air Canada Centre. “I’m double-dipping,” joked Couples, who said he knows band member Glenn Frey. The Seattleite said he also hoped to catch the Mariners play the Blue Jays over the weekend.

Fred tees it up this week in a tournament he hasn’t played in since 1995 – the Canadian Open. Fred Couples has competed in nine Canadian Opens.
A preview article in the National Post talks about Fred’s appearance in the Canadian Open. Here’s an excerpt:

A stretch of more than two hours on the range Tuesday – some of it glad-handing with fellow golfers, but much of it firing bag after bag of balls – indicated Couples is in pretty good shape.

Just not good enough for him to think he can be an elite player any more.

“You always want to play well, but you’ve got to play more to beat these guys,” he said. “You can’t just show up after two weeks off and play Monday and hit balls Tuesday and play Wednesday and think you’re going to do well.

“But that’s where I’m at now.”

If Couples sounds like someone accepting the fact his PGA career is winding down, that is because it seems like he is.

He talks freely about readying himself for the Champions Tour following his 50th birthday next October and says he carries no melancholy about what might have been.

“I feel lucky,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that play injured, and I feel like I’ve done pretty well. If I was healthier, obviously I know I could have done better.”
