Fred Couples scored a third round 73 under very difficult conditions in the third round of the PODS Championship. After playing 12 holes in the morning to complete the weather delayed second round on Saturday, Fred returned to fire the 2-over score that actually moved him up the leaderboard. Only 5 players managed under par rounds on Saturday as the wind gusted to over 30 miles per hour.

Fred started his day off the tenth tee and went double bogey-birdie-double bogey-birdie before settling in over the final 14 holes to finish even par.

Despite the 2-over score, Fred moved up the leaderboard to 35th place from 40th place and is eight shots behind leader Stewart Cink. Fred is only three shots out of the top ten.

The second round of the PODS Championship was delayed due to weather. Fred had bogeyed two of his first six holes, so the timing was fortuitous. Several players were unable to complete their round, including leader Jeff Maggert.

The leaderboard is shaping up to be an “old school” shootout. As previously mentioned, Maggert leads and in the top ten are Kenny Perry, Billy Mayfair, Lee Janzen, Mark Calcavecchia, Stuart Appleby, Ted Purdy and Bill Andrade.

Couples finds himself only three shots out of the top ten, but more ominously, only two shots from the current projected cut line. When play resumes on Saturday, Fred will be starting from the fairway on the seventh hole, just 142 yards from the hole.

Fred Couples birdied the two outward half par fives and parred the rest in the opening round of the PODS Championship. The 2-under 69 leaves him four shots behind first round leader Bart Bryant, although several players were unable to complete their round due to rain.

This is Fred’s second time playing in the PODS Championship – his one other time appearing was in the first edition played in 2000 where he tied for 14th. Tomorrow’s tee time will be pushed back from his 1:00 PM start by at least 1/2 hour and more rain is in the forecast for tomorrow.

Doug Ferguson of the AP writes at length about Fred in his latest offering, including talk about his back.

“I feel good,” Couples said. “I played the four (tournaments), and then I went to see this guy in Waco. He said I looked better than he thought. Obviously, my goal is to play. The best I probably played was at Phoenix, and I missed the cut. And the other tournaments, I did pretty well. So I feel like I’m on track, and my goal is to really be ready for Augusta.”

The “guy in Waco” is John Patterson, a Texas back specialist whose clientele includes Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz and Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady.

Fred also talked briefly about the cut streak at the Masters.

“If the leaders are up here and the cuts are down here, I want to make sure I’m moving way up the ladder,” Couples said. “If I don’t, it will be very disappointing because I’m not there to play well. If I don’t play well and miss the cut, the streak is over, and I’ll be watching TV Saturday and Sunday. But it’s a nice thing. It’s not anything worldly.

“I’m not going to go down as the guy who made however many cuts in a row it is. I’m planning on playing well.”

Sports Illustrated’s Gary Van Sickle pens a long article on Fred, his play thus far and being named Presidents Cup captain. A long article that feels both nostalgic and optimistic.

Here’s a sample.

The best thing about Fred may be that he still thinks golf is fun, and that golf should be fun. That’s why, despite his apparent lack of interest in administrative duties, he’ll be a good Presidents Cup captain. He’ll have Michael Jordan, a hall-of-fame guy’s guy, at Harding Park in some kind of team capacity. He’s also hoping to have comedian Robin Williams in the team room. “He lives like three minutes from the course,” Couples said Tuesday. “I had no idea.”

Couples explained that team events can get boring because of all the official functions — photo shoots, meet-and-greets, banquets, etc. He thought Williams would be an ideal guy to have hanging around. “It’s not like he’s going to tell Davis Love to cut a 7-iron on the 14th hole or anything,” Couples said.

He has already appointed an assistant captain, but he’s not ready to make the announcement. He admitted that he had two men on his list, and that Love, his good friend, was one of them. Draw your own conclusion.
